The Waterfall in Ramkhamhaeng National Park

Sai Rung Waterfall or Nam Tok Sai Rung in local which means the rainbow waterfall is nestled in the abundant forest in the west of Khao Luang range. It is a famous and magnificent waterfall of Sukhothai region which origin from the source of the water around the area of Chedi Mount that formed to the stream called “Klong Phai Na” and flows to the southwest and plops from the high cliff finally. The splash when reflects the sunlight created the colorful spectrum of the rainbow which is the remarkable scene of nature. However, Sai Rung Waterfall has a fall just only in the rainy season. Within the area is the ranger unit about 50 meters from the National Park office. The Rainbow Waterfall features 4 levels of the cascade, and each is appropriated for water play. To reach the waterfall, the tourist needs to take the steps from the ranger unit base and walk up along the stream to visit each tier of the fall which are 800 meters, 900 meters, 1,160 meters, and 1,200 meters respectively.

In general, Sai Rung Waterfall welcomes lots of foreign visitors daily, in particular in the weekdays the site is viral. The tourist from abroad chose the place to escape from the hustle and bustle since the fall is still pure nature and can relax truly. The natural attraction like a waterfall in Thailand is a variety which can be both nature-made and man-made. The tourist may experience some places have the concrete dike apparently and counted as a level of the fall, while some we can see the level with the water flows down but it is not counted as the level. Similarly, Sai Rung Waterfall is one of the places that doesn’t count every single tier especially the small level.

4 levels of Sai Rung Waterfall in Sukhothai, Thailand

The Rainbow Waterfall is 4 levels, nevertheless to see the splash clearly needs to go to the fourth level with approximately 1.2 km from the ranger unit base. Usually, the tourist will start the journey at the ranger unit base and heads to the first level of the cascade by walk in about 880 meters. Although 880 meters is not quite long distance, it can make you feel like it’s more than a decade of the journey. The beginning of the path is similar to the trail in general that cuddled with the fresh and natural environment. But once you entered the zone before the tourist arrives at the first level of the fall, climbing over the various size of the rock is the thing you cannot escape.

4 Levels of Rainbow Waterfall

The first level: About 3 – 4 meters high which is not entirely suitable to play the water.

The second level: The water flows out from the gap of the considerable rock similarly the water curtain, it’s not completed, though. The water flows down to the shallow pond that is not proper to play the pool as well. The direction from the second floor to the third floor of the cascade required the visitor to walk and climb along the different scale of the rocks in more 200 meters.

Then, the third level of Sai Rung Waterfall is higher and broader than the previous ones. The water runs followed to the layers of the stone and falls to the basin by below. This tier of the waterfall is ok for playing.

Finally, the highlight of Sai Rung Waterfall, the fourth floor which is the most beautiful spot of the site. However, the location is reserved for the tough one since the journey to reach the destination needs to walks along the edge of the stream and crags. Also, some part of the route needs to climb up over the rock with the high hills intermittently. The distance of this part is 1,200 meters with the abundant semi-evergreen forest that is plentiful of the large trees all along both sides of the way. Besides, the lovely wildflowers blossom to welcome the traveler especially the pink wild rose balsam that fully bloomed in the rainy season.

View Point Top Eyes View

The upper area is the water basin and the viewpoint that allows the visitor to see the scenery of Ban Nam Phu village from the top eyes view, including the water splash that falls down from more than 80 meters cliff. The bright and fresh water runs descending to hit the cliff performs the white spray that contrasts to the verdant green of the forest creating the beautiful picture of the nature that anyone would fall for. Especially, when the splash reflects the bright shiny sunlight resulted in the dazzling spectrum of the rainbow which is the origin of the title of the fall. The Rainbow Waterfall provides the water almost the year but the most period to see the prettiest fall is in the rain season.

Apart from that, the place is plentiful of the dragonflies, butterflies, and many kinds of birds soar around the cliff of the waterfall which is an impressive moment toward the eyes of the tourists very much. And another remarkable thing of the place is the local visitors that come to relax at the waterfall picking up the rubbish in the location to drop at the bin which is an excellent presentation to build the unique behavior of the tourist to protect and save the place, too.

The best time to experience the rainbow phenomenon at the Rainbow Waterfall is between 11.00am – 4.00pm.

Guideline for the Tourist

  • In case you would like to play the water at the site, please noted that Sai Rung Waterfall might not be a good choice since there are rare basin and pool with plentiful water and the route to reach the place that you can enjoy the splash is quite severe. 
  • In case you are one who loves adventure with the excellent condition of health. Sai Rung Waterfall might be another challenging destination you should not skip. Plus, the beautiful natural environment here is worthwhile for your wild journey.
  • The Rainbow Waterfall is not recommended for the seniority and children with the route to reach the fall as mentioned previously.

The Journey to the Rainbow Waterfall

The trip to reach Sai Rung Waterfall from the town of Sukhothai drives on the road number 101 route Sukhothai – Kirimas. Once you arrive at Kirimas keeps driving more about 18 km, and there’s the right fork for you to take. Then, the path will take you to pass Ban Dan Lan Hoi district and about 13 km will be the right lane. Enter to that lane and go straight on about 4 km to reach the destination.

As if the tourist would like to go to the Rainbow Waterfall by the public transport, there’s the pick-up truck service from Kirimas district. Anyhow, it provides only charter service.

The admission fee of the Sai Rung Waterfall is free if the visitors get the accommodation service at Ramkhamhaeng Nationa Park. However, in case the date on the ticket is different from the day you visit Sai Rung Waterfall, the entrance fee is charged.
